Go Behind the Scenes with Disney Conservationists
Posted on 03/05/2018
While Disney may be best known for its live shows, exciting attractions and the chance to shake hands with Mickey Mouse, Orlando guests will also have the chance to play conservationist for a limited time with a unique behind-the-scenes tour of Disney’s Animal Kingdom.
In honor of the park’s 20th-anniversary celebration, Disney is rolling out “A Path Less Traveled,” a self-described “special collection of unique experiences that give guests a fun behind-the-scenes look at the magic of nature.”
The activities, which will only be available April 1-May 5, include a trio of behind-the-scenes animal care programs, as well as VIP seating at the Rivers of Light nighttime show. Adventurers looking for a more intimate exploration of the park will enjoy:
A Visit to Rafiki's Planet Watch—Take a peek at one of Disney’s state-of-the-art veterinary hospitals while learning about the theme park’s animal care program. The program also includes a stop at the Animal Nutrition Center—the headquarters for animal meals, where experts prepare food every day for more than 1,500 animal residents.
Birds Nest Exploration—Disney is a migratory playground for the purple martin, North America’s largest swallow. The birds travel more than 3,000 miles from their winter home in the Brazilian Amazon to their Orlando perch, where Disney has set up nearly two dozen purple martin house “resorts.” While playing conservationist for the day, guests will be able to check out the homes of these world travelers.
Unforgettable Elephant Encounters—Finally, the program includes a one-hour Caring for Giants tour, which delves into the life of the African elephant herd, the park's largest inhabitants.
Throughout this experience, guests can observe the elephants from a distance of approximately 80 to 100 feet, a closer encounter than what regular park visitors experience.
Guests will also meet with dedicated animal specialists who care for the wellness of the African elephant herd. Learn about their day-to-day responsibilities while also gleaning fascinating facts about the elephants. You’ll also meet African cultural representatives who share stories of Disney’s conservation efforts dedicated to the preservation of wild populations throughout their homeland.
VIP Viewing of Rivers of Light–Catch the park’s newest nighttime show from premium, waterfront seats.
The experiences programs are scheduled throughout the day, but the first begins at 11 a.m. and guests must check in at the Curiosity Animal Tours Kiosk by 10:30 a.m. Reserve the tour by calling Flair Travel or learn more at the Disney Parks blog.
The fee for the entire program is $59. A snack and drink option will also be provided.
