Check Out World’s First Underground Drop Tower Ride

Posted on 08/03/2017

Theme park enthusiasts looking for a something out of the ordinary should travel to Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park in Colorado to experience the Haunted Mine Drop, the only underground drop tower ride in the world.

Guests enter the queue and are treated as if they are arriving for their first day of work at the Glenwood Mining Corporation. The recently opened underground ride then drops passengers 110 feet down inside Iron Mountain while ghostly mining tales play through the speaker system.

The building is themed to mimic an old mine atmosphere, with a wood and rusted tin exterior, mining relics, vintage signage and video effects. Visitors are told the story of how the mine was originally shut down years ago due to a deadly accident.

Once inside the mine drop ride, the madness begins as the story comes full circle.

“We’ve been waiting a long time for this day. Construction of the Haunted Mine Drop started in the spring of 2016, and the planning began a couple of years before that,” Glenwood Caverns Adventure Park owner Steve Beckley said in a statement. “The reactions from our first riders have made it all worth the wait.”

The Haunted Mine Drop attraction was conceived and constructed by renowned ride designer Stan Checketts and the Soaring Eagle company in Logan, Utah.

In addition to the underground drop ride, Glenwood Caverns is the country’s only mountaintop theme park. The facility also boasts several high-profile rides, including the Giant Canyon Swing and the highest-elevation, full-sized roller coaster in America: the Cliffhanger Roller Coaster.
